Colombian presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe Turbay, who was shot during a campaign rally in June, died Monday, August 11, in a Bogotá hospital, his wife confirmed. He was 39 years old.
“Rest in peace, love of my life, I will take care of our children,” María Claudia Tarazona wrote on Instagram. “I ask God to show me the way to live without you.”
Uribe Turbay had remained in critical condition for more than two months after undergoing emergency surgery. He was shot while campaigning in western Bogotá despite being surrounded by security personnel.
The attack, captured on video, revived memories of the violent decades of the 1980s and 1990s, when presidential candidates and high-profile political figures in Colombia were often targeted by drug cartels and insurgent groups.
