Federal Judge Extends Block on Trump’s Ban of Foreign Students at Harvard

A federal judge said Monday she would briefly extend a temporary order blocking President Donald Trump’s effort to bar foreign nationals from entering the U.S. to study at Harvard University. U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs, presiding over a hearing in Boston, extended the restraining order until June 23 to allow more time to deliberate on a possible longer-term injunction. “We will issue a decision as soon as we can,” she said in court.

Harvard attorney Ian Gershengorn argued that the Trump administration’s June 5 proclamation violates the First Amendment by retaliating against the university for resisting federal demands to alter its governance, curriculum, and ideological direction. Nearly 6,800 international students are currently enrolled at Harvard, comprising about 27% of its student body. The Trump administration has targeted Harvard through funding freezes and threats to revoke its tax-exempt status, prompting a series of legal challenges from the university.
