LEESBURG, Florida \u2014 November 12, 2025.<\/strong> A 57-year-old Florida grandmother has been charged after allegedly striking and killing her five-year-old grandson<\/strong> while driving under the influence early Sunday morning \u2014 a tragedy investigators called \u201cany parent\u2019s worst nightmare.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n According to the Leesburg Police Department<\/strong>, officers responded around 7:00 a.m.<\/strong> to a residential neighborhood after reports of a child struck by a vehicle. When they arrived, they found the boy unresponsive in the driveway. Despite paramedics\u2019 efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The driver, identified as Nancy Jean Wiles<\/strong>, told officers she had been \u201cbacking out slowly\u201d when she felt a bump and realized she had run over her grandson, who was playing behind the vehicle. Authorities said field sobriety tests indicated she was intoxicated<\/strong>, and her blood alcohol level measured nearly three times the legal limit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Detectives say Wiles appeared distraught but failed to explain why she was driving so early after a night of drinking. She was taken into custody and booked into the Lake County Jail<\/strong> on charges of vehicular homicide<\/strong>, DUI manslaughter<\/strong>, and child neglect resulting in death<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThis is any parent\u2019s worst nightmare \u2014 a completely preventable tragedy,\u201d said Lt. Daniel Griffin<\/strong>, a Leesburg police spokesperson. \u201cAlcohol, family, and vehicles should never mix, especially when children are nearby.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Court records show Wiles has a prior DUI arrest from 2019<\/strong>, for which she received probation and mandatory alcohol counseling. The current case could carry a sentence of up to 15 years in prison<\/strong> if convicted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Neighbors described the scene as heartbreaking. \u201cWe heard screams and saw the grandmother on the ground crying,\u201d said one witness. \u201cShe kept saying, \u2018I didn\u2019t see him.\u2019 It was awful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The child\u2019s parents, who were inside the home at the time, are cooperating with investigators and have requested privacy.
