California officials announced plans to revoke 17,000 commercial driver\u2019s licenses<\/strong> issued to immigrants after discovering that many were granted expiration dates that extended beyond their legal authorization<\/strong> to remain in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision comes after weeks of criticism from the Trump administration<\/strong>, which accused California and other states of improperly licensing noncitizens<\/strong> for commercial driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy<\/strong> said Wednesday the move proves the state \u201cacted improperly\u201d after previously defending its licensing practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAfter weeks of claiming they did nothing wrong, Gavin Newsom and California have been caught red-handed,\u201d Duffy said. \u201cNow that we\u2019ve exposed their lies, 17,000 illegally issued trucking licenses are being revoked.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

California Governor Gavin Newsom\u2019s office<\/strong> disputed Duffy\u2019s claim, asserting that all affected drivers held valid federal work authorizations<\/strong> at the time their licenses were issued. Officials clarified that the revocations are related to a state law<\/strong> requiring licenses to expire on or before<\/strong> an individual\u2019s legal stay in the country ends, as reported by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOnce again, Sean \u2018Road Rules\u2019 Duffy fails to share the truth \u2014 spreading easily disproven falsehoods in a sad and desperate attempt to please his dear leader,\u201d said Brandon Richards<\/strong>, a spokesperson for Newsom.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The controversy intensified after several fatal truck crashes<\/strong> in Texas, Alabama, and California involving drivers in the country illegally. The August crash in Florida<\/strong>, where an unauthorized immigrant truck driver made an illegal U-turn, killing three people, pushed the issue into the national spotlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response, Duffy has imposed new federal restrictions<\/strong> on immigrants seeking commercial driver\u2019s licenses, limiting eligibility to those with H-2A, H-2B, or E-2 visas<\/strong>. States will now be required to verify immigration status<\/strong> through federal databases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Department of Transportation<\/strong>, only 10,000 of the 200,000 noncitizen commercial drivers<\/strong> nationwide would qualify under the new criteria. The rules are not retroactive<\/strong>, meaning the remaining drivers can keep their licenses until renewal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

California officials say they are cooperating with federal audits to avoid further penalties. Duffy has already revoked $40 million in federal funding<\/strong> and warned the state could lose an additional $160 million<\/strong> if it fails to comply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The revocation notices will go into effect within 60 days<\/strong>, giving affected drivers time to address their legal status or seek new authorization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
