HLF was <strong>designated<\/strong> and later <strong>convicted<\/strong> as a Hamas front organization in 2008 \u2014 one of the largest terror-financing cases in U.S. history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marouf is also related by marriage to members of the <strong>Elashi family<\/strong>, several of whom were convicted in the HLF case and a separate 2004 prosecution involving business transactions with a Hamas operative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Community organizations including <strong>CAIR\u2013Texas<\/strong> and MAS-DFW have publicly defended Marouf, calling him a \u201cpillar of the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">COMMUNITY BACKLASH: RALLIES AND PUBLIC STATEMENTS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Following Marouf\u2019s arrest, prominent Texas imam <strong>Omar Suleiman<\/strong>, founder of the <strong>Yaqeen Institute<\/strong>, condemned ICE\u2019s actions, calling Marouf \u201cthe heart of our community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suleiman claimed on X that ICE \u201cabducted him\u201d after he dropped his child at school.
