The Kilauea volcano<\/strong>, one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, has erupted once again<\/strong>, releasing towering jets of lava and triggering renewed concern across the Big Island after a weekend of intense volcanic activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dramatic videos circulating on social media show the moment glowing lava breaks through the crater floor<\/strong>, shooting upward and spilling rapidly across the summit area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)<\/strong>, Kilauea experienced multiple eruption episodes<\/strong> throughout the weekend \u2014 part of a broader eruptive sequence that began in late 2024<\/strong> and has now reached 37 total events<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the strongest activity, lava fountains from two vents<\/strong> soared up to 500 meters (1,640 feet)<\/strong> into the air, visible from miles away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the eruptions paused, a massive plume of ash and volcanic gas<\/strong> drifted above the summit, blanketing the sky with haze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

24 OVERFLOWS IN A SINGLE DAY<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The weekend escalation peaked on Saturday, November 22<\/strong>, when the southern vent overflowed 24 times<\/strong> between 9:00 AM and 8:00 PM HST<\/strong>, according to USGS field data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Friday, November 21<\/strong>, both the north and south vents overflowed simultaneously<\/strong> between:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • 10:27\u201310:36 AM<\/strong> (HST)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • A second northern overflow occurred between 10:42\u201310:54 AM<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    The lava remains contained within Kilauea\u2019s summit crater<\/strong>, and has not reached Volcano Village<\/strong>, located about 5 km (3 miles)<\/strong> away. Residents, however, are on heightened alert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    ORANGE ALERT & HEALTH RISKS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Due to the intensity of the eruptions, USGS issued an Orange Volcano Alert<\/strong>, now in effect through at least November 26<\/strong>, warning of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Increased eruptive activity<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Volcanic ash<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Elevated sulfur dioxide (SO\u2082)<\/strong> emissions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      While the immediate danger to surrounding communities remains low<\/strong>, SO\u2082 gas and shifting winds could pose short-term respiratory risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Officials stress that conditions could change quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
