The \u201cBig Short\u201d investor takes aim at Tesla\u2019s market cap, Elon Musk\u2019s $1 trillion pay package, and what he calls a tech bubble<\/strong> that\u2019s disconnected from business fundamentals.<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Michael Burry<\/strong>, the famed investor portrayed in The Big Short<\/em>, has launched a new critique of Tesla\u2019s valuation<\/strong>, calling the electric vehicle giant \u201cridiculously overvalued\u201d<\/strong> and warning that Elon Musk\u2019s newly approved $1 trillion pay package<\/strong> will only dilute the company\u2019s stock further<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a post on his Substack platform<\/strong>, Burry said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTesla\u2019s market capitalization is ridiculously overvalued today and has been for a good long time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Tesla\u2019s market cap stands at $1.38 trillion<\/strong>, with stock trading around $427 per share<\/strong> as of Monday, far above typical auto industry metrics. Burry, who gained fame for predicting the 2008 financial crisis<\/strong>, claimed that Tesla fans<\/strong> have followed a pattern of delusional optimism<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Elon cult was all-in on electric cars until competition showed up, then all-in on autonomous driving until competition showed up, and now is all-in on robots \u2014 until competition shows up.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

A GREATER TECH BUBBLE?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Burry\u2019s latest comments are part of a broader warning about what he calls a tech bubble<\/strong> that has inflated stocks across several major firms, including Nvidia<\/strong> and Palantir<\/strong>. Burry recently disclosed large bearish positions<\/strong> against both companies, warning that the market is disconnected from business fundamentals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response to Burry\u2019s comments, Palantir CEO Alex Karp<\/strong> dismissed him as \u201cbats\u2013t crazy<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Burry\u2019s return to public commentary follows his deregistration of his hedge fund<\/strong> last month and the launch of his Substack, where he promises more direct, unfiltered analysis<\/strong> of the financial landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

COMPETITION IN THE EV MARKET<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While Tesla remains the dominant player<\/strong> in the U.S. electric vehicle market with around 41% market share<\/strong> as of August 2025, Burry argues that this dominance is shrinking<\/strong> as competition from traditional automakers<\/strong> and newer entrants heats up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tesla\u2019s stock has gained 11% this year<\/strong>, bouncing back from a volatile period tied to Dogecoin-related trading<\/strong> and macroeconomic headwinds. However, analysts have questioned the sustainability of Tesla\u2019s sky-high stock price<\/strong>, particularly as the company faces growing competition in the EV space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Burry\u2019s critique centers on the excessive optimism<\/strong> baked into Tesla\u2019s market price, as well as Musk\u2019s gigantic $1 trillion pay package<\/strong>, which ties Musk\u2019s compensation to Tesla reaching an $8.5 trillion market cap<\/strong> in the next decade \u2014 nearly twice the size of Nvidia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
