Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hern\u00e1ndez<\/strong>, who was sentenced last year to 45 years in U.S. federal prison<\/strong> for aiding drug traffickers, has been released following a presidential pardon from Donald Trump<\/strong>, according to confirmation from the U.S. Bureau of Prisons<\/strong> and statements from Hern\u00e1ndez\u2019s wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA free man,\u201d wrote Ana Garc\u00eda<\/strong>, posting an image of her husband\u2019s updated Bureau of Prisons record on X.
She thanked Trump directly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAfter almost four years of pain and difficult challenges, my husband Juan Orlando Hern\u00e1ndez RETURNED to being a free man, thanks to the presidential pardon granted by President Donald Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Hern\u00e1ndez was released Monday from USP Hazelton<\/strong> in West Virginia, where he had been serving time following his conviction for taking bribes from drug cartels who moved nearly 400 tons of cocaine<\/strong> through Honduras en route to the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TRUMP: \u201cTHE PEOPLE OF HONDURAS ASKED ME\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One<\/strong>, Trump defended the decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was asked by Honduras, many of the people of Honduras,\u201d Trump said.
\u201cThey basically said he was set up\u2026 They said it was a Biden administration set-up. And I looked at the facts and I agreed with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Trump also claimed Honduran citizens believed Hern\u00e1ndez was targeted because he was president, not because of drug charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U.S. prosecutors said the opposite during trial, portraying Hern\u00e1ndez as a politician who weaponized the Honduran security forces<\/strong> to protect traffickers while presenting himself publicly as a U.S.-aligned anti-cartel crusader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hern\u00e1ndez was arrested in Honduras at the request of the U.S. weeks after leaving office in 2022 and extradited soon after by President Xiomara Castro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U.S. District Judge P. Kevin Castel<\/strong> said during sentencing that Hern\u00e1ndez\u2019s punishment should be a warning to \u201cwell educated, well dressed\u201d leaders who believe power shields them from accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hern\u00e1ndez maintained he was innocent, claiming traffickers framed him in retaliation for extraditions carried out under his tenure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HONDURAS RESPONDS \u2014 LEGAL BATTLE MAY CONTINUE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Honduras Attorney General Johel Zelaya<\/strong> responded quickly, saying his office is \u201cobligated to seek justice and end impunity.\u201d
He did not specify which charges Hern\u00e1ndez may face upon his return \u2014 though multiple corruption investigations tied to his presidency remain unresolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Xiomara Castro, who originally ordered Hern\u00e1ndez\u2019s arrest and extradition, remains in office until January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
