This decision came down to our family\u2019s safety and the importance of dedicating all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>His spokesperson confirmed that Mamdani will <strong>give up the apartment entirely<\/strong> and will not sublet it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">A RENT-STABILIZED FLASHPOINT DURING THE CAMPAIGN<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the mayoral race, Mamdani faced criticism for living in a rent-stabilized unit \u2014 a coveted and limited housing resource \u2014 despite coming from a prominent family and earning well above the average Queens household income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Independent candidate <strong>Andrew Cuomo<\/strong> accused him of misusing the system, saying the unit should have gone to a lower-income tenant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mamdani, son of filmmaker <strong>Mira Nair<\/strong> and Columbia professor <strong>Mahmood Mamdani<\/strong>, said he did not know the apartment was rent-stabilized when he moved in during 2020, when he was earning <strong>$47,000<\/strong> annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">\u201cASTORIA WILL ALWAYS LIVE INSIDE ME\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In an emotional message to constituents, Mamdani said leaving Queens would be bittersweet:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cCooking dinner side by side in our kitchen, sharing a sleepy elevator ride with our neighbors, hearing music and laughter vibrate through the walls\u2026 we will miss it all.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>He promised to remain grounded in the neighborhood that shaped his politics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cWhile I may no longer live in Astoria, Astoria will always live inside me and the work I do.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The mayor-elect highlighted the resilience of the community during the pandemic, anti-immigrant attacks, and the ongoing affordability crisis.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The incoming mayor says the move will allow him to focus fully on his affordability agenda as criticism continues over his long-held rent-stabilized apartment.
