Miami\u2019s mayoral runoff \u2014 formally a nonpartisan election \u2014 has transformed into a proxy battle over President Donald Trump\u2019s agenda<\/strong>, pitting Democratic county commissioner Eileen Higgins<\/strong> against Republican and former DHS deputy Emilio Gonz\u00e1lez<\/strong>, in what analysts describe as a rare local race with national implications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Higgins led the first round in November with 36%<\/strong>, while Gonz\u00e1lez secured 19.5%<\/strong>, setting up a runoff now shaped heavily by Trump\u2019s direct intervention<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is supposedly a nonpartisan election, but that\u2019s the biggest myth,\u201d said Eduardo Gamarra<\/strong>, political scientist and director of the Latino Public Opinion Forum at Florida International University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
