The Kremlin issued a cautious response Monday to recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who last week announced the deployment of two nuclear submarines in reaction to what he called “provocative, foolish, and incendiary” comments from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
“There are no winners in a nuclear war. That is perhaps the most fundamental principle we start from,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, emphasizing that Russia does not see current discussions as an escalation, though the issues being debated are “highly complex and sensitive.”
Trump’s announcement came amid growing nuclear rhetoric, stating, “When it comes to nuclear threats, we must be prepared. And we are fully prepared.”
While both sides have exchanged sharply worded statements, Russian officials have stressed the need for restraint and de-escalation, citing the importance of dialogue amid global concerns about rising nuclear tensions.
