New York City Mayor Eric Adams declared a local state of emergency on Thursday following torrential rains that triggered dangerous flash floods across the city. The declaration takes effect immediately and will remain in place until Friday, August 1 at 8:00 a.m.
“Flash floods can happen with little or no warning,” Adams wrote on X. “Water can rise quickly, blocking roads, subways, and emergency access routes. Immediate action is needed for all New Yorkers.”
City residents were urged to avoid all non-essential travel and only use public transportation if absolutely necessary. Those living in basements or low-level apartments were strongly advised to evacuate to higher ground.
The NYPD has opened precincts to assist individuals without access to safe housing, and city agencies have been fully mobilized to ensure public safety and maintain essential services. Alternate side parking regulations will be suspended Friday to aid storm response operations.
