President Donald Trump sent a letter Thursday to former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, expressing solidarity over what he described as “unjust treatment” by Brazil’s legal system. The letter, dated July 17 and shared by Bolsonaro’s team, calls for an immediate end to ongoing judicial proceedings against him.
“You were a strong and respected leader who served your country well,” Trump wrote. “This trial must end immediately.” He went on to voice concern about alleged government-led attacks on freedom of speech in both Brazil and the United States.
Trump also referenced his administration’s tariff policies as part of his opposition to censorship and political persecution, urging Brazil’s current leadership to “change course” and “stop attacking political opponents.”
The letter comes amid heightened political tension in Brazil, where Bolsonaro faces legal challenges over alleged abuses of power and disinformation campaigns. Trump’s message signals continued alignment between the two right-wing leaders and has already stirred political reactions in both countries.
