The second-round draft pick died by suicide after a police pursuit in Texas, officials confirmed Thursday.
The Dallas Cowboys announced Thursday morning that Marshawn Kneeland, a 24-year-old defensive end, has died.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), Kneeland died by suicide Wednesday night following a police chase in Texas.
Authorities said troopers attempted to stop Kneeland’s vehicle for a traffic violation, but he refused to pull over, prompting a pursuit. Officers later found his car abandoned and crashed, and Kneeland was discovered dead nearby from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Kneeland, selected by the Cowboys in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, played 17 snaps during Monday night’s loss to the Cardinals, including a touchdown on a blocked punt.
“It is with extreme sadness that the Dallas Cowboys share that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning,” the team said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family.”
The NFL also issued a message of condolence, saying the league is working with the team to provide counseling resources.
A standout from Western Michigan University, Kneeland recorded 13 sacks during his collegiate career and had appeared in 18 professional games. His agent, Jon Perzley, remembered him as “a hopeful kid with a dream who poured his heart into every snap.”
“My heart aches for his family, his teammates, and everyone who loved him,” Perzley added. “Please give his loved ones the privacy and compassion they need during this unimaginable time.”
