Spanish Foreign Ministry Urges Citizens to Stay Informed and Exercise
Maximum Precautions Amid Growing Security Concerns
Spain has reiterated its advisory recommending against travel to Venezuela, urging Spanish citizens to remain informed and exercise extreme caution. This follows a wave of flight cancellations by major airlines, including Iberia, Air Europa, Turkish Airlines, Avianca, and others, due to heightened security alerts in Venezuelan airspace.
The cancellations come in response to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) warning about deteriorating security conditions and increased military activity over Venezuelan airspace, particularly affecting flights to and from Caracas.
The FAA’s notice highlights risks to aircraft at various altitudes and phases of flight including arrival, departure, and while on the ground, prompting airlines to suspend or adjust routes for safety reasons.
Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on its nationals to “take extreme precautions” and to stay updated with ongoing developments from official sources.
The growing tensions stem from increased U.S. military operations aimed at countering drug trafficking networks linked to the Venezuelan government, which Caracas strongly condemns as provocations.
Other airlines such as Avianca, TAP, and Gol have also suspended Caracas flights, increasing travel disruptions and concerns for passengers.
Airlines and aviation authorities insist that clear communication and safety assurances from Venezuelan authorities are essential for the resumption of normal flight operations.
The travel advisory and flight suspensions reflect the complex interplay of geopolitical tensions impacting commercial aviation and the safety perceptions of airlines operating in the region.
