🇲🇽 MEXICO’S ATTORNEY GENERAL ALEJANDRO GERTZ MANERO TO STEP DOWN UNDER FEDERAL & INTERNATIONAL PRESSURE

SOURCES SAY PRESIDENT’S OFFICE PUSHED FOR
HIS EXIT FOLLOWING DISPUTES OVER HIGH-IMPACT CASES

Mexico’s Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero will resign on Friday, according to Reuters, amid growing political tensions and international pressure over investigations into fuel-tax evasion networks known as “fiscal huachicol.”

Mexico’s Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero is expected to step down Friday after years of controversy, according to a Reuters report citing senior officials. The move follows increasing friction between the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) and the federal government, as well as mounting pressure from international partners, including U.S. agencies monitoring cross-border fuel-smuggling operations.

Officials told Reuters the decision originated from the President’s Office after disagreements over several high-impact organized-crime cases, including investigations involving La Barredora, “Miss Huachicol,” and regional networks tied to the multimillion-dollar fiscal huachicol fuel-tax evasion scheme. These cases reportedly intensified tensions within Mexico’s security and justice sectors.

Political analysts say Gertz Manero’s exit appears designed to reduce diplomatic friction with the U.S., where federal agencies such as the FBI, DEA and DHS have pushed for stronger cooperation and more transparent prosecution strategies. Improved alignment with Washington is expected to be a top priority for his successor.

Gertz Manero has been embroiled in multiple scandals during his tenure, including accusations from critics that he used the FGR to settle personal and political disputes — allegations he has consistently denied. His departure may offer the federal government an opportunity to reset the institution’s public image and restore confidence in its independence.

A temporary replacement is expected to be named within hours, after which the Mexican Senate will begin the formal process to appoint a new Attorney General. Lawmakers say they expect a swift transition given the sensitivity of ongoing investigations.

The resignation marks one of the most significant shake-ups in Mexico’s justice system in recent years and could reshape bilateral security cooperation between Mexico and the United States.
