The action-movie icon was recognized at the 48th Kennedy Center Honors at the White House, where he appeared with a black cane — a reminder of decades of physical injuries from his stunt-heavy career.
At 79 years old, Sylvester Stallone — one of the most recognizable faces in American action cinema — became one of the standout honorees at the 48th Kennedy Center Honors, held Saturday inside the Oval Office of the White House.
Stallone was celebrated alongside Gloria Gaynor, KISS, Michael Crawford, and George Strait, in a ceremony led by President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, recognizing each artist’s contributions to American culture.
Following the event, Stallone posed on the red carpet with his wife, Jennifer Flavin Stallone, wearing a classic black tuxedo, his Kennedy Center medallion, and a small U.S. flag pin on his lapel.
But it was the sleek black cane he carried — used openly and confidently — that drew the most attention.
YEARS OF ACTION MOVIES CATCH UP WITH HIM
The cane appearance takes on new resonance in light of Stallone’s own recent reflections about the toll his action-heavy career has taken on his body.
In a 2024 episode of The Family Stallone, the actor spoke candidly about long-term injuries, especially a severe neck fracture he sustained while filming The Expendables.
“I’ve done stupid things,” Stallone admitted.
“I felt a tremendous impact… I never recovered. After that film, I was never physically the same.”
The injury resulted in:
- A metal plate inserted into his neck
- Spinal fusion surgery
- Multiple follow-up back surgeries
The Hollywood icon said he has lived with chronic mobility limitations ever since.
He used the moment to warn the next generation of action stars:
“Don’t do your own stunts.”
AN HONOR CELEBRATING A LEGEND
Despite the physical challenges, Stallone received a hero’s welcome at the White House.
The Kennedy Center Honors highlighted:
- His multi-decade influence on American film
- His iconic characters, from Rocky Balboa to John Rambo
- His lasting impact on action cinema worldwide
President Trump praised Stallone’s contributions, calling him “a symbol of American grit, resilience, and heart.”
