NEW FEATURE ALLOWS USERS TO SHAPE PLAYLISTS THROUGH TEXT PROMPTS, ADVANCING THE STREAMERโS AI STRATEGY
Spotify is testing Prompted Playlists, an AI-driven feature that lets users build playlists using natural-language commands, further personalizing the listening experience.
Spotify has begun testing a new AI-powered feature called Prompted Playlists, allowing users to generate personalized playlists simply by typing natural-language prompts such as โchill road trip songs,โ โearly-2000s indie vibes,โ or โmusic to help me focus.โ The tool marks a deepening push into AI-driven personalization for the worldโs largest audio streamer.
The new feature expands on Spotifyโs existing personalization engine, which already drives flagship experiences like Discover Weekly, Daily Mixes, Blend, and smart recommendations across the platform. Prompted Playlists, however, gives listeners direct influence over the algorithm by describing the exact mood, genre mix, or theme they want.
Internally, the system uses generative-AI models trained on Spotifyโs extensive metadata and user-behavior patterns, enabling the platform to instantly assemble playlists tailored to highly specific scenarios. Early testers report that the AI is capable of interpreting complex prompts โ including emotional tones and activity-based descriptions.
Analysts say the feature positions Spotify to compete more aggressively with AI tools emerging in other entertainment ecosystems, such as TikTokโs recommendation engine and YouTube Musicโs generative playlist experiments. It also aligns with the platformโs broader strategy of leveraging AI to increase user engagement and listening time.
The company has not provided a global rollout date but confirmed that the feature is currently in limited testing across select markets. Spotify says user feedback will shape how quickly Prompted Playlists becomes available to the broader public.
Industry observers predict that AI-guided music discovery will become a core standard in streaming platforms over the next few years.
